I don’t miss Vista

After buying the iPhone, I wanted to wipe my old Windows Mobile phone in order to sell it. So, I figured I would boot up Vista to find out how to get that done. It turns out the answer was in the phone manual which was on the CD it came with, and it was in PDF format. Vista does not let you view PDF’s by default, so I had to install Adobe Reader. Little did I know what pain that this seemingly simple task would unleash. No less than 9 clicks and 30 minutes later, I finally was able to open and view my PDF.

Steps to install Adobe Reader on Windows Vista

  1. Open IE7 and go to www.adobe.com
  2. Click Get Adobe Reader
  3. Click Continue on Adobe’s site
  4. Click Download Adobe Reader on Adobe’s site
  5. Click the Information bar in IE to allow installation of the Adobe Reader add-on
  6. Click Continue in the User Account Control (UAC) IE Add-on Installer dialog warning
  7. Click Install in Security Warning dialog that asks “Do you want to install this software?”
  8. Click Run in Security Warning dialog that asks “Do you want to run this file? Adobe_inst.exe”
  9. Click Continue in UAC propmt that says “Windows needs your permission to continue”
  10. Adobe Reader is finally downloading and installing
  11. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box that says “Adobe Reader was setup successfully”
